Media codes include the use of camera, acting, setting, mise en scene, editing, lighting, sound, special effects, typography, colour, visual composition, text and graphics . These are important to films because conventions are what makes a film known and recognisable without codes and conventions films would not be the same. Media codes are the physical elements that audiences experience which brings narrative conventions to the media forms.

The rule of thirds is a composition guideline that places your subject in the left or right third of an image, leaving the other two thirds more open . While there are other forms of composition, the rule of thirds generally leads to compelling and well-composed shots. The importance of it is that it helps draw the viewer's eye into the image and places more emphasis on the subject . Ideally, the empty space that's left should be in the direction the subject is looking or heading into. The rule of thirds doesn't work 100 percent of the time though.
